The familiar lessons of a recent incident in Gaza.
On March 23, Israeli soldiers in southern Gaza fired on a convoy of ambulances that were moving toward them, killing fifteen—among them six Hamas operatives. A usual cycle of events followed: Israel was condemned; the IDF explained the circumstances; new information came out that seemed to contradict the initial Israeli explanation; then, after more information came to light, it turned out that this was, at worst, the sort of awful mistake that inevitably happens in the midst of an active warzone. Contrary to claims that the soldiers tried to cover up the incident, they had in fact immediately contacted relevant UN officials so that the bodies of the deceased could be returned to their families. None of this, however, has slowed the condemnations.
