Moses as Statesman and Lawgiver

A Platonic look at the Torah’s human hero.

In less than three weeks, Jewish families around the world will read the Haggadah, a text from which Moses—the seeming protagonist of the exodus story—is conspicuously absent. But while Moses’ role as agent of Israelite salvation is deliberately forgotten, he is remembered by traditional Jews as Moshe Rabbeinu, Moses our teacher (literally, “our rabbi”), for his role as instructor in the laws of the Torah.
