Norman Lamm (1927–2020) was one of the outstanding figures in the history of Orthodox Judaism in America. Born in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, he obtained both a rabbinic ordination and a PhD in Jewish philosophy, served for many years as a pulpit rabbi, wrote extensively on theological subjects for both lay and expert audiences, founded two important journals, and from 1976 to 2003 served as president of Yeshiva University.
