A 2nd-Century Coin Testifies to Jewish Hopes for Freedom

Eleazar the Priest.

In 132 CE, Simon Bar Kokhba led a revolt against Roman rule, which was brutally suppressed a few years later. During the brief interval of the uprising’s success, Bar Kokhba’s followers began minting their own coins. Archaeologists recently discovered one of these, engraved with the words “Eleazar the Priest” and “Year One of the Redemption of Israel,” in the Judean Desert, as can be seen in this video from the Israel Antiquities Authority. (Hebrew with English subtitles, 2 minutes.)
