America Should Speak Up for the Jews of Kaifeng

Apropos of Donald Trump’s visit to China, last week’s newsletter mentioned how important it is for the president to address the plight of oppressed Christians in that country—along with Muslims, Buddhists, and members of other persecuted religious groups. Michael Freund adds that the U.S. should also make a point of expressing concern over the small number of Chinese of Jewish descent—remnants of the bygone community of Kaifeng, whose origins lie in the early Middle Ages—who have been suffering systematic mistreatment.
