Ancient Blueprints for the Second Temple

Within the Dead Sea Scrolls are sets of plans for awe-inspiring expansions of the sacred space.

For the Jews returning from Babylonian exile, the reconstruction of the Temple took on enormous significance. The Temple, as it was rebuilt, was a fairly modest structure, especially before the Herodian renovations of the late 1st century BCE. It is perhaps not much of a surprise, then, that the Dead Sea Scrolls include contemporary discussions of spectacular expansions. Clinton Moyer writes:
