Anyone Can Tell Jokes in Saudi Arabia—Just Not about the Government, the People, or the Official Religion

The Riyadh comedy festival.

A two-week-long comedy festival recently concluded in Riyadh, sponsored and arranged by the Saudi government and featuring such big-time American celebrities as Dave Chappelle and Pete Davidson. Unsurprisingly, performers had to agree not to “degrade, defame, or bring into public disrepute . . . or ridicule, the kingdom of Saudi Arabia, . . . the Saudi royal family, [or any] religion, religious tradition, religious figure, or religious practice.” While some of those invited declined to participate on these terms, others—including those who portray themselves as fearless truth-tellers—gladly accepted.
