Britain Banned Israelis to Ensure Calm at a Soccer Match. It Got a Riot Anyway

“Zionists not welcome.”

Last month, officials in the English city of Birmingham announced that Israeli fans would be barred from attending an upcoming soccer match between the local team, Aston Villa, and Maccabee Tel Aviv. The ostensible reason was to prevent violence, although one of the city’s parliamentary representatives boasted about having successfully banned Israelis. On Thursday, the match took place as planned, and violence nonetheless ensued:
