Data Suggest That COVID-19 Took a Toll on Religious Life in the U.S.

People stopped going to places of worship during the pandemic—and many never returned.

A person could be forgiven for thinking that an outbreak of a deadly disease causing serious social disruption might lead people to turn to God for help, or that a period of a year or more when attending houses of worship seemed dangerous might lead congregants to return to churches, synagogues, and mosques with renewed appreciation.
