Explaining the Dreidel, and Other Hanukkah Customs

The first mention of the holiday game appears in the 19th century.

Among the informal practices most widely associated with Hanukkah is playing with a top known as a dreidel. Yet, although there are a variety of texts that mention Jews playing various games on the holiday—sometimes to condemn the practice—the earliest mention of the dreidel appears in the 19th century, according to the Seforim Blog. Hasidic rabbis, in keeping with their general inclination to sacralize folk customs—itself an extension of the longstanding rabbinic inclination to venerate tradition—sought creative explanations:
