Fanny Mendelssohn’s Musical Career, and Jewish Ambivalence

The woman who brought Bach to Italy.

The granddaughter of the Jewish philosopher and communal advocate Moses Mendelssohn, Fanny Mendelssohn (later Fanny Hensel, 1805–1847) was baptized by her father, Abraham Mendelssohn, at the age of ten. Like her more famous brother Felix, she was a gifted pianist and composer, who would introduce the works of Bach and Beethoven to Italy. Sheila Hayman discusses Fanny’s life and career, and her ambivalent attitude toward her conversion and her Jewish heritage. Hayman’s recent documentary on the subject can be viewed by following the link below. (Video, 23 minutes. Audio available on podcast platforms.)
