For America’s Founders, Religion Was Necessary—and Vulnerable to Government Corruption

A mental world populated with Judeo-Christian champions.

With the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence fast approaching, much is being written about the Founders’ religious commitments. Some will point out that figures like Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin were hardly orthodox believers, that there is no mention of God in the Constitution, and that the Founders rejected any sort of state religion. Others will point to the Declaration’s claim that natural rights are “endowed by the Creator” and the religious and biblical imagery that permeated the rhetoric of even the most skeptical Founders.
