On Tuesday night, the Knesset enacted a new Basic Law—Basic Laws being the closest thing Israel has to a constitution—declaring Torah study a “foundational value” of the Jewish people and the state of Israel. (Basic Laws can be passed or overturned with a simple majority, and this one appears to be purely declarative.) It also passed a law preventing the arrest of Haredim illegally evading military service.
