Iran Is Still Killing Its People

On August 23, the Iranian government hanged Majid Adineh for his participation in the popular protests that took place last January. Estimates of the number of executions that have been carried out this year run from 518 to 950—figures that exclude the thousands of protesters who were mowed down in the streets or summarily murdered during the uprising itself. As Masih Alinejad observes, the killings are not “an anomaly, a wartime exception that will end when peace comes,” but the way the Islamic Revolution does things. “Thousands of leftists, monarchists, and dissidents were killed in a matter of weeks” when the ayatollahs came to power in 1979, and so it has been ever since.
