According to the Jewish calendar, last Friday was the 250th anniversary of the death of Rabbi Jacob Emden (known by the acronym Ya’avetz), an outstanding and remarkable figure even in an era of outstanding rabbinic minds. His numerous works ranged from an analysis of the 14th-century halakhic code known as the Tur to a surprisingly modern autobiography to commentaries on nearly every canonical Jewish work.
