Jerusalem: The Scandal of Jewish Particularity

The empirical case for the chosen people.

The expulsion of the Jews from Jerusalem by the Romans was one of the great Jewish tragedies, one that still weighs heavy in liturgical memory. But that very weight raises the question of why this city matters quite so much. This is the subject Norman Podhoretz took up in his 2007 essay “Jerusalem: The Scandal of Particularity.” To commemorate Podhoretz’s career, I’m going to be sharing one of his essays every day for the next several days; this is the first.
