Jonathan Sacks, Bible Commentator

The covenantal reading of “the unmediated word of God.”

Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, whose yortsayt is today, was a theologian, a sophisticated thinker about the political and social problems of modern society, a teacher to Jews and Gentiles alike, and much else. He was also an expositor of the Tanakh, and his published commentaries on the Torah will be studied for generations to come. At the heart of his approach was the belief that the Five Books of Moses—the Humash—are “the unmediated word of God,” and must be read “covenantally.”
