Just in Time for Purim, an Ancient Half-Shekel Coin

A symbol of Jews fighting for their freedom.

Tonight the holiday of Purim begins, and there is no need to elaborate on the connection to recent events in Persia. One of the customs of Purim is to give a charitable donation of one half-dollar coin, which commemorates the ancient commandment—found in the coming Sabbath’s Torah reading—in which each person included in the national census gives a half-shekel coin. The same amount was also given annually for upkeep of the Temples. Thus the recent discovery described by Miriam Sela-Eitam is especially timely:
