In America, there has always been concern—some of it justified, some of it less so—about keeping religion out of politics, a conversation that has returned most recently because of changes to IRS regulations involving clerical endorsements of candidates for office. But another prerequisite of a free society is making sure that government is kept out of religion. Michael Swain considers a recent case in South Africa, where a spate of instances of religious leaders defrauding people, and worse, prompted an attempt at legislative intervention:
