Maintaining Cochin’s Four-Century-Old Synagogue

One of the city’s last Jews has made it his mission.

Once home to one of India’s largest Jewish communities, the city of Cochin is now thought to have no more than 27 Jews; most of the rest have left for Israel over the past four decades. Joseph Elias Josephai has made it his mission to maintain the city’s synagogue—built 450 years ago—where he still comes to pray. (Video, 4 minutes.)
