In addition to being a scholar, sharp analyst of anti-Semitism and Jewish politics, outspoken voice for the Jewish people, and a literary critic, Ruth R. Wisse has also written a brief commentary on the Haggadah, published in Commentary in 1989. She begins by recounting how her own family’s observance of the seder slackened, and then was renewed in 1941, after their own miraculous exodus from Hitler’s Europe:
