On August 8, Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a U.S.-brokered treaty ending a conflict that has led to on-and-off fighting since the breakup of the Soviet Union. While ethnic and religious hostilities between the Azeris—Shiite Muslims who speak a language closely related to Turkish—and the Christian Armenians go back centuries, the recent resolution involves a convoluted border and the establishment a new transit route, sponsored by the U.S., known as the Zangezur corridor.
