Renewed Sanctions on Iran Are a Good First Step, but Not Sufficient

“Snapback” and the end of illusions.

On Saturday night at midnight, the United Nations imposed so-called “snapback” sanctions on Iran over its refusal to obey agreed-upon limits on its nuclear endeavors. The snapback mechanism was put in place by the 2015 nuclear deal, which removed existing sanctions with the proviso that they could be quickly reinstated as a package if Tehran refused to fulfill its end of the bargain.
