Saul Bellow’s Last Interview

Some thoughts on 20th-century American literature.

Five years before his death, Saul Bellow—then eighty-five—was teaching a course on modern literature at Boston University and, together with his longtime collaborator Keith Botsford, had just completed an anthology culled from various journals in which the two were involved. Bellow and Botsford recorded a wide-ranging interview, thought to be Bellow’s last, to promote the volume. Elon Green, who conducted the interview, recounts the experience in an accompanying essay.
