With the ubiquity of mobile phones, social media, and the like, there has been increasing interest—among Jews and Gentiles alike—in adopting some of the observances of Shabbat. Kelsey Osgood explains why such “digital Sabbaths” are bound to fail, in part because they take practices out of their communal and theological contexts and transform them into a form of “self-care,” which often amounts to little more than narcissism.
