Born in Dublin in 1887 to a family of Lithuanian Jewish immigrants (or “Litvaks”), Jessie S. Bloom recalled her childhood experiences in a 1952 essay for Commentary. She recounts therein the community’s strong sense of solidarity and philanthropy, the generally warm relations with Protestant and Catholic neighbors (a far cry from the intense anti-Semitism of today’s Ireland), and her family’s observance of Jewish holidays, including Sukkot:
