In 1908, a Krakow Jewish newspaper published a short story on the occasion of Purim, which this year will be celebrated on the coming Tuesday. The author, writing under the pseudonym “Mazal Tov,” was an eighteen-year-old named Shmuel Yosef Czaczkes, who would later take a different pen name: S.Y. Agnon. Jeffrey Saks has produced the first-ever English translation of this work by the Nobel Prize-winning author. It portrays an enraged wife who has just discovered some “erotic poetry” her husband has composed:
