On Monday, the Rafah crossing at the border of Egypt and Gaza—which has been sealed since Israel seized the city in May 2024—reopened to limited traffic in both directions. Those leaving the Strip must pass through a remote-controlled Israeli digital security checkpoint; those entering are physically searched by the IDF, with the help off a host of high-tech tools. The situation is a far cry from what existed up until 2023, when Egypt controlled the crossing. But it doesn’t guarantee arms won’t get to Hamas, as Amine Ayoub explains:
