The Italian Gentile Novelist Translating the Bible from Hebrew

Since he published his first novel in 1989, the Italian writer and poet Erri De Luca hasn’t stopped composing books—which have won distinguished prizes and made best-seller lists. He has currently been working on translations of biblical books from the original Hebrew. One of his most recent publications was co-authored by a rabbi, and that’s not even to mention his translations of Yiddish poetry. In conversation with the Israeli journalist Hadar Galron in Rome, he responded to a question about the connection he draws between Jerusalem and his native Naples in his 2002 novel Montedidio:
