A country can’t annex its own territory.
Pursuant to the Trump peace plan, Jerusalem is now considering fully applying civil law to areas of the West Bank that have no Palestinian residents, and which would remain under Israel’s control in any foreseeable version of the two-state solution. Such a move, often described as “annexation,” has been widely condemned in advance. But, Dore Gold argues, Israel’s exertion of sovereignty over territory granted to it by international law does not meet the legal definition of annexation. (Video, 4 minutes.)
