Western proponents of the Palestinian cause, writing mostly for “progressive” audiences, have once again begun to make the case for a one-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In their view, writes Joseph Spoerl, Israel should be replaced by a “single ‘secular, liberal, democratic state’ encompassing the entire former mandate of Palestine, with a ‘right of return’ for millions of Palestinian refugees” and their descendants. The arguments behind this position, notes Spoerl, are deliberately grounded in distortions of reality:
