Totally unexpected at the time of the Jewish state’s founding was the demographic growth and flourishing of the Ḥaredim. Nearly a third of Israeli first-graders now attend ultra-Orthodox schools. In conversation with Jonathan Silver, Yehoshua Pfeffer—himself a ḥaredi rabbi—explains this community’s evolution, recent internal changes, the challenges it now faces, and the ways in which he hopes it will continue to change in coming years.
