The Israeli press has cited reports from an unnamed Egyptian official that the Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar has requested that any deal for the release of hostages come with a guarantee that he won’t be killed. If this is true, it would be good news: first, because Sinwar’s fear for his life suggests he believes Israel is closing in on him, and second because he’s more likely to make substantive concessions to save his own skin.
