The Psalmist’s Ode to Jerusalem

“Builded as a city that is compact together.”

In honor of Yom Yersushalayim, Adele Berlin offers a line-by-line analysis—drawing from medieval rabbinic commentaries and modern academic scholarship—of Psalm 122, the psalm that mentions Jerusalem most frequently. The most challenging of its nine verses is the third, which the King James Bible renders “Jerusalem is builded as a city that is compact together,” and Berlin “Jerusalem, built up, indeed, a city bound all together.” She writes:
