The Restoration of Notre Dame and the Burning of the Talmud

The dark side of a civilizational triumph.

Early this month, the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris reopened after being largely destroyed in a 2019 fire. The successful restoration of this landmark of architectural splendor has encouraged those who worry that an increasingly feeble-seeming European civilization has lost its ability to create things of beauty and grandeur.
