The Sordid Tale of Britain’s Family of Celebrity Nazi-Loving Aristocrats

The Mitford sisters.

Last year, a miniseries aired about the Mitford sisters, the six daughters of the well-bred English aristocrats David and Sydney Mitford-Freeman, who gained much celebrity and notoriety in the 1930s and 40s. Most famous was Unity, who proclaimed herself a fascist, moved to Germany, and entered Hitler’s inner circle. There was also Diana, who had an extramarital affair with Oswald Mosley, leader of the British fascist party. The parents themselves were drawn in the same direction until World War II made their views too socially inconvenient. Clare McHugh wasn’t impressed by the miniseries, but she was by a recent biography of Sydney:
