The Ten Commandments as a Statement of Principles

Law before land.

In the biblical account, notes Leon Kass, before the Israelites had a land or an economy, they were given a set of laws, to which the Decalogue functions as a preamble and a statement of principles. Discussing the meaning of the Ten Commandments, Kass focuses in particular on the ones to “honor your father and your mother” and to “remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy.” (Audio, 90 minutes.)
