The Travels of Petahiah of Regensburg

A medieval rabbi’s journey across the Jewish world.

While the Jews of medieval Europe have left historians with a large corpus of writings, they are mostly religious texts that shed little light on the sorts of basic questions about Jewish life that historians seek to answer. One exception is the 12th-century German rabbi Petahiah of Regensburg’s account of his journey through Eastern Europe, Mesopotamia, and the Levant. Henry Abramson describes this fascinating work.
