Thirty Years Since the Slaying of Yitzhak Rabin

Taking responsibility rather than casting blame.

On the Gregorian calendar, today is the anniversary of the assassination of Yitzchak Rabin. Thirty days after the Israeli prime minister’s death—what is known in Jewish tradition as the shloshimRabbi Norman Lamm delivered a sermon that has retained its timeliness. Lamm condemned those who would use the assassination to advance their own political agendas, as well as those who wished to put the blame on the entire Religious Zionist community from which the assassin hailed. At the same time, Lamm called on religious Jews, and all Jews, to take some share of responsibility:
