Why the Lord Delights in Burnt Offerings and Sacrifices

A 2,000-year conversation about what were once Judaism’s most important rituals.

A large portion of the Torah and the Talmud, and indeed much of the Hebrew Bible, is taken up by discussions of sacrificial rituals, from the offerings of Cain and Abel through the restoration of the Temple and its rites by Ezra and Nehemiah. Even today, the Temple service stands at the center of the traditional Yom Kippur liturgy. But what was the purpose of worshipping God through the slaughter of animals?
