Is Turkey the New Iran?

Since October 7, the relationship between Turkey and Israel has reached a new low. Ankara has suspended trade with Jerusalem, sought the arrest of senior Israeli officials, and built a ring of military partnerships stretching from Syria to the Red Sea. 

The Turkish-Israeli analyst Hay Eytan Cohen Yanarocak tells the story of why this happened in his new Mosaic essay, and explores a variety of unsettling questions: Is Turkey—as a growing number of Israeli officials now argue—becoming the next Iran? What does Erdoğan's fervent embrace of Hamas and escalating anti-Zionist rhetoric mean for Israel's security? Can Washington, which has remained largely silent as the relationship deteriorates, keep the two from coming to blows?

To take up these questions in more depth, we've invited Yanarocak to speak with Dan Schueftan and Michael Doran. Schueftan believes Turkey is a major threat to Israel's security, while Doran maintains that Turkey remains an important part of the American alliance system in the Middle East. Together with Jonathan Silver, they'll weigh the scale of the threat against the backdrop of Israel's broader security doctrine and America's role in the region.
