A Christian Visits 7th-Century Jerusalem

A few decades after the Arab conquest.

Around 680 CE, a French bishop named Arculf traveled to Egypt and the Levant, and then recorded what he saw. Kyle Orton examines Arculf’s account of his visit to Jerusalem, which had been conquered by the Arabs some 40 years previously. To Arculf’s surprise, the new rulers did not destroy the churches or other Christian shrines. He also describes the Temple Mount:
