A Filmmaker Seeking to Document the Holocaust in the Soviet Union

Erasing Jewish suffering in the USSR.

Nearly half of the Jews who died in the Shoah were living in the USSR at the time of the Nazi invasion. Most were never taken to death camps, but were shot dead or starved to death near their homes, often with the collusion of their non-Jewish neighbors. In a series of documentaries consisting mostly of interviews with survivors, filmed near where the massacres took place, Boris Maftsir has sought to create a cinematic monument to these events. Izabella Tabarovsky describes his work, and explains Soviet efforts to repress the story he tells.
