Lebanon will say farewell to a 47-year-old interim force.
The UN Security Council voted yesterday, unanimously, to renew the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), founded in 1978 to keep the peace between Israel and terrorist groups operating on Lebanese soil. But it also decided that this would be the final renewal: at the end of next year, UNIFIL is to wind down its operations and withdraw. Writing last month, Hussain Abdul-Hussain explained why these peacekeepers do more harm than good:
