American Withdrawal Leaves Syria Vulnerable to Islamic State

The group is rebuilding its strength, and has many supporters within the regime.

As of last Thursday, the U.S. has handed over the al-Tanf base in Syria to the Syrian military, as part of a general drawdown of forces in the country. American troops established the base—located at a strategic point on the Damascus-Baghdad highway, near the borders with both Jordan and Iraq—during the fight against Islamic State (IS) in 2016. By maintaining a presence in Syria, Washington kept Russian and pro-Iranian forces out of the eastern part of the country, protected Kurdish forces, and prevented Islamic State from returning. With Bashar al-Assad gone, at least the first of those is no longer a concern.
