The Shocking Decline of Atheism

The New Atheists could burn, but not build.

In the first decade of this century, there was much talk of the New Atheists, who argued stridently that religion was both irrational and morally insalubrious. The content of their tracts didn’t differ very much from those of skeptics of previous generations, except, with orthodoxy already in decline, it took little courage to advance such ideas. Now unbelief in America seems to have plateaued, prominent figures in the movement have retreated form their most radical positions, and New Atheism seems largely forgotten. Nick Pompella writes:
