On Monday, President Trump signed an executive order allowing for the designation of individual chapters of the Muslim Brotherhood as foreign terrorist organizations (FTOs). Doing so allows the U.S. government to hinder their finances, arrest members, and collect intelligence on their activities. The Brotherhood, founded nearly a century ago, is the original Islamist group—Hamas being its best-known offshoot—and the debate over whether it should be formally considered a terrorist organization has gone on for years.
