In 2019, Sudan’s genocidal, Islamist, and pro-Iranian dictator Omar al-Bashir was deposed after a 30-year reign. During his tenure, Sudan hosted Osama bin Laden and became a major conduit for Tehran to smuggle arms to Hamas. Bashir’s fall gave some hope to the country, which even took steps toward joining the Abraham Accords. Since then, a civil war began between the two generals who cooperated in overthrowing Bashir, and the country has fallen into bloody chaos, as various powers back the rival factions.
