Among those misinterpreting Rubio’s remarks is Barack Obama’s former spokesman Tommy Vietor, an anti-Israel hardliner and fierce critic of any attempt to contain or punish the Islamic Republic. Vietor brought up the subject on Tuesday while interviewing California’s Democratic governor Gavin Newsom, who made no objection before going on to share his thoughts about Israeli domestic politics. Contrary to some reports, Newsom didn’t actually say that Israel is an “apartheid state,” only that it is likely to become one. He then went on to advocate ending U.S. support for Israel.
