George Kennan Didn’t Think Iran Should Be Contained. He Thought It Should Be Punished

The diplomat and historian George Kennan has a reputation as one of the great wisemen of American foreign policy, thanks to his role in formulating the strategy of containment pursued against the Soviet Union during the cold war. As a result, he is also remembered as a proponent of restraint: don’t try to counter the Soviets directly, he argued, just keep them in check and wait them out.
